Pidgin and Yahoo! Messenger Issues

Filed Under (Announcement, Internet) by Huz on 01-07-2009

I have been using Pidgin for more than 2 years now since introduced to me by Laj. For me, it is by far the lightest, fastest and most dependable IM software that I’ve used. And best of all, it gives me the ability to use tabbed window chatting, similar to ability of internet browsers  nowdays where you can open so many windows nested into one primary window. It becomes a very handy feature especially when you’re chatting with a couple of people at the same time as it doesn’t hog the taskbar with individual chat windows.

Recenly, I’ve been having a major problem with my dependable pidgin connection to Yahoo! Messenger. For about almost 2 weeks pidgin just refuses to connect without any error messages (timeout/connection refused etc etc..). I tried to search for the bug almost everywhere, changing the host pager server more that 10 times. I even tried removing the account and uninstalling/reinstalling the software but with no success. Finally I found the fix today after reading it here. It seems that Yahoo! changed their authentication system to better fit YM8 and this basically nullified the old authetication system that pidgin has been using up version 2.5.6. Upgrading to the newer version pidgin (2.5.7 and above) should automatically fix the problem. If you’re using ubuntu, just run this 2 commands in terminal and run your update manager after that, and it should be fixed.

sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com \ 67265eb522bdd6b1c69e66ed7fb8bee0a1f196a8

echo deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu \ `lsb_release –short –codename` main | \
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pidgin-ppa.list

Ok, finally I need to say that a tag isn’t a tag if the tag doesn’t go on. So for this post, I’m tagging my sis Hmd to write up and start tagging her readers. And may we all live happily ever after in this tagging taggy world.

Adios.

Windows Live Writer

Filed Under (Cool Stuffs, Internet) by Huz on 09-01-2009

Windows recently released their new product packaged under their Windows Live emblem. This post is written and published using Windows Live writer that I just downloaded. Seems simple enough to set it up to my blog server. Just input in your blog URL, the username and password and it will basically grab the site’s CSS and layout to the software. After that, it’s pretty much straight forward. Just write, and add your images or videos and publish.

The images and videos will be uploaded to Windows Lives server so you don’t need to upload them one by one, and there are also some nice picture effects that you can use without needing to photoshop them. Works well for the extra busy people I’d say.
